Almost great... - Clarrissa L. Zamora - Tucson arizona
First what I liked...there was good flow. The discussion between them was believable and articulate. The sex scene was well described. Crude language? Hey, its an erotica...there are supposed to be sexual words and a tad crudeness for the badness, the hotness. In the elevator in the first scene the story showed him monologuing to himself.. some guys think freely in that vein so the language was totally appropraite.
What disappointed me in the story was the lack of background...how did she get into an accident..whose father was his , what company did they work for...details...invovle me more please. And what really bummed me out was the author had this total dominate attitude in the guy going on and here I was expecting a little dominance, a little B/D. The female character even said she hoped he wouldn't be gentle...she wanted rough...I wanted rough... I went looking for rough...I got a puff ball...a limp episode...she took the lead, he took a bottom place...ughhh. Lots of potential, the author can write well, but needs to follow up and follow through next time. I will see if the next book is better, the author has great potential as I said.

A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes

A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes

gotoshop

Product Details

My object in writing this little book is to show you how you may prepare and cook your daily food, so as to obtain from it the greatest amount of nourishment at the least possible expense; and thus, by skill and economy, add, at the same time, to your comfort and to your comparatively slender means. The Recipes which it contains will afford sufficient variety, from the simple every-day fare to more tasty dishes for the birthday, Christmas-day, or other festive occasions.

In order to carry out my instructions properly, a few utensils will be necessary. Industry, good health, and constant employment, have, in many instances, I trust, enabled those whom I now address to lay by a little sum of money. A portion of this will be well spent in the purchase of the following articles:—A cooking-stove, with an oven at the side, or placed under the grate, which should be so planned as to admit of the fire being open or closed at will; by this contrivance much heat and fuel are economized; there should also be a boiler at the back of the grate. By this means you would have hot water[10] always ready at hand, the advantage of which is considerable. Such poor men's cooking-stoves exist, on a large scale, in all modern-built lodging-houses. Also, a three-gallon iron pot with a lid to it, a one-gallon saucepan, a two-quart ditto, a frying-pan, a gridiron, and a strong tin baking-dish.

There are over 200 recipes in this ebook.

Sample recipe:

No. 4. Potato Soup for Six Persons.

Peel and chop four onions, and put them into a gallon saucepan, with two ounces of dripping fat, or[15] butter, or a bit of fat bacon; add rather better than three quarts of water, and set the whole to boil on the fire for ten minutes; then throw in four pounds of peeled and sliced-up potatoes, pepper and salt, and with a wooden spoon stir the soup on the fire for about twenty-five minutes, by which time the potatoes will be done to a pulp, and the soup ready for dinner or breakfast.

No. 5. Pea Soup for Six Persons.

Cut up two and a-half pounds of pickled pork, or some pork cuttings, or else the same quantity of scrag end of neck of mutton, or leg of beef, and put any one of these kinds of meat into a pot with a gallon of water, three pints of split or dried peas, previously soaked in cold water over-night, two carrots, four onions, and a head of celery, all chopped small; season with pepper, but no salt, as the pork, if pork is used, will season the soup sufficiently; set the whole to boil very gently for at least three hours, taking care to skim it occasionally, and do not forget that the peas, etc., must be stirred from the bottom of the pot now and then; from three to four hours' gentle boiling will suffice to cook a good mess of this most excellent and satisfying soup. If fresh meat is used for this purpose, salt must be added to season it. Dried mint may be strewn over the soup when eaten.

The Humorous Story an American Development. Its Difference from Comic and Witty Stories.

Customer Reviews ::

Mark Twain extras - Roy Sinclair - New Zealand, Christchurch
Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Baby Board Books)

American writer Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain has given us some literary gems with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and his travel adventures in nineteenth-century Europe and to Australia and New Zealand. Here is is discussing telling rather than writing a story.

Humour, he says, is American while comic is English and witty is French. He follows this typically brilliant essay with examples of story telling and some intriguing experiences of mental telegraphy.

Good on you Dodo Press for specialising in rare and out-of-print books.

Mark Twain devotees will want to add this slim volume to their collection.

Frankenstein : or The Modern Prometheus

Frankenstein : or The Modern Prometheus

gotoshop

Product Details

Shelley's suspenseful and intellectually rich gothic tale confronts some of the most important and enduring themes in all of literture--the power of human imagination, the potential hubris of science, the gulf between appearance and essence, the effects of human cruelty, the desire for revenge and the need for forgiveness, and much more.

Frankenstein, loved by many decades of readers and praised by such eminent literary critics as Harold Bloom, seems hardly to need a recommendation. If you haven't read it recently, though, you may not remember the sweeping force of the prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multilayered doppelgänger themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. As fantasy writer Jane Yolen writes of this (the reviewer's favorite) edition, "The strong black and whites of the main text [illustrations] are dark and brooding, with unremitting shadows and stark contrasts. But the central conversation with the monster--who owes nothing to the overused movie image … but is rather the novel's charnel-house composite--is where [Barry] Moser's illustrations show their greatest power ... The viewer can all but smell the powerful stench of the monster's breath as its words spill out across the page. Strong book-making for one of the world's strongest and most remarkable books." Includes an illuminating afterword by Joyce Carol Oates.

Poor quality control of the digital text. - Philip Rothman - East Brunswick NJ
Great classic stories. My only complaint is that periodically a word will be completely garbled and be unreradable, leaving the reader guessing as to what it is. I do not know why this occurs and would think the publisher would proof read the digitial text before releasing it. Poor quality control.

I want my money back. - william r schwartz - Tracy, Ca United States
Silly me, I didn't read the reviews. Was going to use it for studying, but like everyone else is saying, it's impossible to navigate. There are chapters notations In Roman numerals!! You can go to the index and jump to a chapter, but then you have to flip pages, and as you're flipping pages, there's no reference as to where you are. Like I said, the chapters are marked only roman numerals, but they're in a very light grey and difficult to see if you're flipping. I am really disappointed and wish I too could get my money back on this one.

Anne's House of Dreams

Anne's House of Dreams

gotoshop

Product Details

"Thanks be, I'm done with geometry, learning or teaching it," said Anne Shirley, a trifle vindictively, as she thumped a somewhat battered volume of Euclid into a big chest of books, banged the lid in triumph, and sat down upon it, looking at Diana Wright across the Green Gables garret, with gray eyes that were like a morning sky.
The garret was a shadowy, suggestive, delightful place, as all garrets should be. Through the open window, by which Anne sat, blew the sweet, scented, sun-warm air of the August afternoon; outside, poplar boughs rustled and tossed in the wind; beyond them were the woods, where Lover's Lane wound its enchanted path, and the old apple orchard which still bore its rosy harvests munificently. And, over all, was a great mountain range of snowy clouds in the blue southern sky. Through the other window was glimpsed a distant, white-capped, blue sea—the beautiful St. Lawrence Gulf, on which floats, like a jewel, Abegweit, whose softer, sweeter Indian name has long been forsaken for the more prosaic one of Prince Edward Island.
Diana Wright, three years older than when we last saw her, had grown somewhat matronly in the intervening time. But her eyes were as black and brilliant, her cheeks as rosy, and her dimples as enchanting, as in the long-ago days when she and Anne Shirley had vowed eternal friendship in the garden at Orchard Slope. In her arms she held a small, sleeping, black-curled creature, who for two happy years had been known to the world of Avonlea as "Small Anne Cordelia." Avonlea folks knew why Diana had called her Anne, of course, but Avonlea folks were puzzled by the Cordelia. There had never been a Cordelia in the Wright or Barry connections. Mrs. Harmon Andrews said she supposed Diana had found the name in some trashy novel, and wondered that Fred hadn't more sense than to allow it. But Diana and Anne smiled at each other. They knew how Small Anne Cordelia had come by her name.

Anne's House of Dreams - jayden robyn -
This is my definete favorite of "Anne of Green Gables." My favorite characaters were the Fords and Capt. Jim. Anne and Gilbert were great, too (who would have known that Anne married the person who called her 'carrots'?!). I liked the entire story-line, and it wasn't boring or pushed or anything. "Anne of Green Gables" is one of my favorite series.
